The Basic Study of Play Therapist¡¯ Experience and Coping Behaviors about Premature Termination

Abstract
This study is mainly focused on premature termination that the play therapists experienced and their coping behaviors about premature termination. A total of 37 play therapists in Seoul and Gyeonggi were surveyed and they described the experience and coping behaviors about premature termination in a self-report format. Response contents divide into groups each statement as similar concept. The contents is categorized by examination and revision with one academic adviser and three play therapists who have play therapist¡¯ certification that is more than doctor¡¯s course. The results from this study is as follow. Most of play therapists defines premature termination as ¡®One-way termination without agreement¡¯, ¡®Termination which did not achieve a goal¡¯. The contents of premature termination that the play therapists experienced is classified into parent, environment, therapist, child. Among them parent variable is classified into 10 elements and therapist variable is classified 3 elements. Looking at the contents, parent variable is divided into ¡®Trust of therapist¡¯, ¡®A period of counseling¡¯, ¡®Understanding of counseling¡¯, ¡®Motive for counseling¡¯, ¡®Individual problem¡¯, ¡®Expectation for counseling¡¯, ¡®Satisfaction of counseling¡¯, ¡®Conviction of counseling¡¯, ¡®Surroundings¡¯, ¡®The others¡¯. Therapist variable is divided into ¡®individual factor¡¯, ¡®professionalism of counseling¡¯, ¡®experience of counseling¡¯. At the premature termination situation, psychological state is classified into ¡®Play therapist¡¯s psychological state¡¯ and ¡®Psychological state of client¡¯. Play therapist¡¯s psychological state is classified into ¡®thought¡¯ and ¡®emotion¡¯. Coping behaviors about premature termination is classified into ¡®Discussion with client¡¯. ¡®Education and training¡¯, ¡®Social support¡¯, ¡®Therapist¡¯s effort¡¯, ¡®Environment change¡¯. ¡®Discussion with client¡¯ is classified according to term as ¡®early of therapy¡¯ and ¡®middle of therapy¡¯, ¡®a previous to premature termination¡¯
